The Tale of Our Vision of Wood at Green&Blue

In the interview ‘I cacciatori di alberi morti e il mago del legno’, conducted by Dario D’Elia (la Repubblica), we described our love for wood and the path that led us to work with ‘salvaged materials’, recounting our philosophy and the unique method by which we transform fallen trees and discarded wood into products with an inimitable character.

Wood that tells stories

In our sawmill, founded in 1929 in Borgo San Dalmazzo, in the province of Cuneo, we have always believed that wood has a soul and a story to tell.
For generations, we have been dedicated to woodworking, and for some time we have chosen to follow a path that combines tradition and innovation, while deeply respecting the environment that surrounds us.

Our dead tree hunters

Our work starts in the woods, where we collaborate with teams of ‘dead tree hunters’. These experienced craftsmen are always on the lookout for fallen, diseased or dead trees, allowing us to give new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste. We not only collect wood from forests, but also from old beams, decommissioned parquet floors or abandoned structures.

Recovering dead wood may seem like a strange idea, but it makes perfect sense to us. Not only do we respect nature’s biological cycle, but we also contribute to improving the health of the forest by removing what hinders the growth of younger trees and making the ecosystem more balanced.

Sustainability at the heart of our work: recovery, innovation and respect for the environment

Wood processing is what makes our products really special. The process we have developed, together with several research institutes, allows us to obtain a strong and stable wood that is perfect for use in carpentry and architecture.
After cleaning the wood and removing any nails or screws, we subject it to a disinfection and normalisation process: it is ‘cleaned’ in a humidity bath, where the high temperature stabilises and disinfects it. It then goes through the drying process to ensure its durability and prepare it for future applications.
Each step in the process is carefully attended to in order to preserve the unique characteristics of the wood, such as its natural grain and its ability to insulate or transfer heat. This allows us to obtain products that are not only beautiful, but also extremely functional.

We deeply believe that wood must be respected at every stage of its life cycle. That is why nothing is thrown away in our sawmill: the chips and sawdust produced during processing are recovered and used to fuel the kilns. Every step we take is designed to reduce our impact on the environment and maximise the value of each piece of wood.
